Good questions

A little more
about Veil.

Here’s what to know
before you make yourself at home.

Does Veil use my camera?

Yes. When you enable protection, Veil uses your Mac’s camera to detect faces and approximate head direction. The camera indicator stays on. Frames are processed locally and aren’t recorded or uploaded. Detection is limited to what the camera can see.

Is this the same as locking my Mac?

No. Veil’s cover is an app overlay, and Touch ID protects dismissal through Veil. It is not a macOS security boundary; quitting or terminating the process can remove the cover. Use macOS Lock Screen for system security. Veil also has an optional setting to request locking your Mac when you’re away.

Does it know who I am?

Standard protection detects presence. Optional Face Recognition can remember a face you explicitly enroll, using a profile stored only in this Mac’s Keychain. Webcam recognition is experimental and can be fooled by a photo or video; it is not Apple Face ID. You can always choose Touch ID or your Mac password instead.

How quickly does the screen cover?

Immediate mode covers on the first qualifying additional face. With the default five camera samples per second, samples are about 200 ms apart, followed by processing. Real response depends on your camera, lighting, and settings. It cannot prevent every glance, and people outside the camera’s view may not be detected.

What happens when I look away?

Enable look-away cover to cover your selected screens when you turn your head for the configured delay. This uses approximate head direction, not precise eye tracking. Optional, experimental media pause supports Music and Spotify; YouTube in Safari requires additional setup.

Is the AI optional?

Entirely. Screen text recognition and copying run locally. Translate, Summarize, and Explain send only the text you review and explicitly choose to send to Anthropic. These features require your own Anthropic API key and may incur charges through that account. Camera images are never sent.

Is Veil a subscription?

No. Veil Personal is $19 USD once for one active Mac. Veil Teams is $7 USD per seat once, with a five-seat minimum and one Mac per seat. Beta and Veil 1.x updates are included; future major upgrades may be paid. Existing beta licenses remain valid. Optional AI requires your own API key and has separate provider charges. See the purchase details for current availability.

How do I install Veil?

When the Mac download is available in your account, open the DMG and drag Veil into Applications. Launch it from Applications, then look for the Veil shield in your menu bar. Sign in and activate your license, then allow camera access when you enable protection. Veil requires macOS 14 or later; the same download runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

The next public Mac release is being prepared. Screen text capture needs Screen Recording permission; optional media controls may request Automation permission.

Your Veil account

Camera processing, text recognition, and enrolled face profiles stay on your Mac. An internet connection is needed for initial activation and at least once every 24 hours to refresh your license.

The privacy details

Your data. Your decision.

Camera & screen text

Camera frames and OCR captures are processed on your Mac. Veil does not upload camera images, screenshots, or enrolled face profiles. An optional mathematical face profile is kept in this Mac’s Keychain and can be deleted in settings.

Accounts & activation

Conyro stores your email, password hash, license status, a random device identifier, the device name you provide, and activation timestamps on its server. Passwords and license keys are stored as secure hashes. Account sessions use essential cookies. Optional website measurement counts page views and button clicks only with your permission; it does not create visitor profiles. No advertising trackers are added.

Optional AI

Only text you review and choose to submit is sent to Anthropic using your own API key. The key stays in macOS Keychain. Anthropic’s terms and data handling apply.

Screen authentication

Touch ID and your Mac login password are handled by macOS. Your Veil account password is separate. Veil’s cover is an app overlay; use macOS Lock Screen for system security.
